Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about invoice payment deadlines
How is an invoice deadline calculated?
The deadline is calculated by adding the agreed days (30, 60, 90 or other) to the invoice issue date. If 'end of month' payment is specified, the date is moved to the last day of the month in which the normal deadline would fall.
What is 'end of month' (EOM)?
End of Month (EOM) payment means the term is postponed to the last day of the month in which the normal deadline falls. For example, '30 days EOM' on a February 15 invoice: 30 days → March 17, end of month → March 31.
What are the standard payment terms in Italy?
Legislative Decree 231/2002 establishes that payment terms in commercial transactions between companies cannot exceed 30 days (ordinary) or 60 days (if agreed in writing). Late payment automatically accrues interest.
What happens if an invoice is not paid by the deadline?
After the deadline, late payment interest automatically accrues at the ECB rate + 8 percentage points. The creditor can send a formal notice and, if payment is not made, proceed with an injunction order or formal default notice.
How is the due date of an invoice worked out?
The agreed number of days is added to the issue date, whether 30, 60 or 90. With end of month terms the date moves to the last day of the month the due date would fall in.
What payment terms does Italian law set?
Legislative decree 231 of 2002 sets 30 days for business to business deals, which become 60 only when the parties put it in writing. Past that term late payment interest starts running on its own.
What happens if an invoice goes unpaid?
From the day after the due date, interest runs at the European Central Bank rate plus eight points. After that comes a formal demand and, if needed, a court order for payment.
