Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about net salary calculation
How is net salary calculated from gross?
From the gross annual salary (RAL), the employee INPS contributions (about 9.19%) are subtracted first, giving the taxable base. IRPEF is applied on this by brackets (23% up to €28,000, 35% up to €50,000, 43% above) plus regional and municipal surcharges. The result is the net annual salary, which divided by the number of payments gives the net monthly amount.
Is the calculation as accurate as my payslip?
No, it is a simplified estimate. The real payslip depends on employment tax credits, dependents, integrative treatment, specific municipal surcharge, benefits and other contract items. Use this tool for a rough estimate, not for official calculations.
What changes with 13 or 14 monthly payments?
The net annual salary does not change: it is simply divided into more installments. With 13 payments there is the 13th month salary (December), with 14 also the 14th (June/July). For the same RAL, more payments mean a slightly lower monthly amount but extra payments that raise income in those months.
How do you get to the net figure on a payslip?
From the gross yearly salary you subtract the employee share of social contributions, about nine per cent, which gives the taxable base. Income tax bands and local surcharges are then applied to that.
What changes with thirteen or fourteen pay packets?
The yearly net does not change: what changes is how many instalments it is split into. With more pay packets each month is a little lower, with the extra ones arriving in December and mid year.
Why does the result not match my own payslip?
Because the calculation is simplified. A real payslip also carries employment and family allowances, the supplementary payment, the surcharge of your town and the items of the collective agreement.
