Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about tips

How much tip do you leave in Italy?

In Italy tipping is not mandatory like in the USA. In restaurants you generally leave between 5% and 10% of the bill, but it's a personal choice. At cafes you often round up the change. In other European countries the norm is between 10% and 15%.

How is a tip calculated?

The tip is calculated as a percentage of the total bill. The formula is: tip = bill amount × percentage / 100.

Is it correct to split the bill and tip equally?

Equal division is the most common and practical. Alternatively, each person can pay their own share and their part of the tip. The calculator shows both options.

What does 'round up total' mean?

The 'round up total' option rounds the bill including tip up to the next whole euro, simplifying cash payment and slightly increasing the actual tip.

How much should I tip?

It depends on the country. In the United States fifteen to twenty per cent at a restaurant is the norm, in the United Kingdom ten to twelve and a half, while across much of continental Europe a tip is optional and rounding up is enough.

How is the tip worked out?

The percentage you choose is applied to the total of the bill, before or after any service charge depending on local habit. The result is added to the bill to give what you leave.

Is it better to split evenly?

It is the quickest way and the one most used among friends. Otherwise everyone pays for what they had plus their share of the tip: the calculator shows both splits side by side.
