Indicative estimate: the cost of heating the water depends on the type of water heater (gas, electric, heat pump) and on the incoming water temperature. Adjust the values to match your situation.
How to save
Practical tips to cut the cost of your showers
Fit a low-flow showerhead or a flow reducer/aerator: it can halve water use without losing comfort.
Take shorter showers and turn off the water while soaping: even a couple of minutes less makes a big difference.
Lower the water heater temperature by a few degrees (around 38-40°C): heating the water less cuts the energy bill.
Maintain the water heater (descale it) or consider a heat-pump or solar thermal water heater: they use far less energy to heat the same water.
Seasonal tips
The habits that make a difference in every season
In winter the incoming water is colder, so heating it costs more: take shorter showers.
Set the water heater well: too high a temperature in winter pushes consumption up needlessly.
Insulate the hot-water pipes to avoid heat loss between the water heater and the shower.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about the cost of a shower
How much does a shower cost?
The cost of a shower is the water used plus the energy to heat it. A typical 8-minute shower with a 12 l/min head uses about 96 litres: with water at €2.2/m³ and gas at €0.10/kWh it costs roughly €0.40-0.50 per shower. With a high-flow head or longer showers the cost rises quickly.
How much water does a shower use?
It depends on the showerhead flow and the duration. Flow ranges from about 6 l/min (eco head) to 18 l/min (high flow); the standard is about 12 l/min. An 8-minute shower therefore uses between 48 and 144 litres. To estimate the litres just multiply the minutes by the litres per minute.
Shower or bath, which is cheaper?
Usually the shower wins: a bath needs on average 120-180 litres of hot water, while a short shower with an eco head can stay at 40-60 litres. You pay the difference twice, on the water and on the energy to heat it. A bath becomes competitive only with very long showers and high-flow heads.
How can I cut the cost of a shower?
The three most effective steps are: fit a low-flow showerhead or a flow reducer/aerator (it can halve consumption), take shorter showers and turn off the water while soaping, and lower the water heater to 38-40°C. Fixing leaks and maintaining the water heater (descaling) also help keep consumption down.
Is an eco showerhead really worth it?
Yes: an eco showerhead cuts the flow from about 12 to 6 l/min while keeping good pressure thanks to aeration, so it halves both the water and the energy to heat it. It costs a few euros and pays for itself in a few weeks in a family home. It is one of the best cost-to-saving upgrades.
Gas or electric water heater, which is cheaper?
For the same heat produced, heating water with gas almost always costs less than with electricity: in Italy gas is about €0.10-0.13/kWh of heat, while electricity is around €0.25-0.30/kWh. A heat-pump water heater is even more efficient because it produces 3-4 kWh of heat per kWh of electricity, offsetting the higher cost of power.
How much does hot water weigh on the bill?
Domestic hot water (showers, sinks, washing) is one of the heaviest items in home energy use: after heating, it can account for 15-25% of a household's gas or electricity use. Showers are the main part, which is why acting on flow, duration and temperature has a real impact on the bill.
Shower or bath, which costs less?
The shower usually wins: a bath takes 120 to 180 litres of hot water, while a short shower with an eco head can stay at 40 to 60. You pay the difference twice, on the water and on the energy that heats it.
Does my data stay private?
Yes, and not because we promise it: this tool runs entirely inside your browser. What you type or upload never leaves your device, so it never reaches a server of ours and there is nothing we could keep, read or lose. You can check it yourself: open the page, disconnect from the internet, and the tool keeps working.
Do you store what I enter?
No. There is no database behind this tool: we do not store your files, your text or your results. When you close the tab nothing is left — not here with us, because it never arrived, and not anywhere else.
Do you profile me? Are you GDPR compliant?
We do not profile you: there is no account to create, we never ask for your email to use a tool, and we keep no profile of what you do. We are an Italian company and we work under the GDPR and the other European rules, with the privacy notice and the consent request in plain sight. One thing we say in full rather than hiding it behind a slogan: the ads on the page are Google's, and Google may use cookies to personalise them. You decide from the consent banner: if you say no the ads stay, but they are not personalised, and the tool works exactly the same.
If it is free, how do you make money?
From the ads on the page, and that is all. We do not sell your data, there is no hidden paid plan, there is no limit that eventually asks for your card, and you do not have to sign up. The ads pay for the servers and for the time we spend writing the tools: that is how we can keep them open to everyone.
