Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about barcodes

What type of barcode does this tool generate?

The tool generates Code128 (Code Set B) barcodes, a widely used linear 1D standard in logistics, warehousing and inventory. Code128 can encode all 128 printable ASCII characters and automatically includes a check character (modulo 103 checksum) to ensure reliable scanning.

Why download an SVG instead of a PNG?

SVG is a vector format: it can be scaled up or down to any size without losing sharpness, which is essential for a barcode that must stay scanner-readable. You can open the SVG in Illustrator, Inkscape or Word, or easily convert it to PNG at whatever resolution you prefer.

Which characters can I use?

You can use any printable ASCII character: uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, space and common symbols (such as - _ . / +). Accented characters and emoji are not supported because they are not part of the Code128 Code B set. If you enter an invalid character, the tool warns you.

Which type of barcode is generated?

The generator produces Code128 barcodes in Code Set B, the linear standard used in logistics, warehousing and stocktaking. The modulo 103 checksum character is added on its own.

Why does the barcode download as SVG?

SVG is a vector format: the barcode prints at any size and stays sharp for the scanner. The file opens in Illustrator, Inkscape or Word and converts to PNG when you need it.

Which characters does the barcode accept?

Code128 Code Set B takes the printable ASCII characters: upper and lower case letters, digits, space and symbols such as hyphen, full stop and slash. Accented letters and emoji are not allowed.
