Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about net salary calculation in Italy

How is net salary calculated in Italy?

Net salary is obtained by subtracting from the gross annual income (RAL) the employee social security contributions (approximately 9.19%) and net IRPEF (tax calculated by brackets, reduced by employee deductions).

What is the difference between the standard and flat-rate regime?

In the standard regime, progressive IRPEF rates are applied by brackets. In the flat-rate regime (for VAT numbers) a substitute tax of 15% (or 5% for the first 5 years of activity) is paid on taxable income equal to 78% of revenues (profitability coefficient for the main category).

What are employee tax deductions?

These are tax benefits that reduce the IRPEF owed by employees. In 2024 the base deduction is €1,955, which progressively decreases as income increases until it reaches zero above €50,000.

Why choose 13 pay periods?

Most Italian collective agreements provide for 13 pay periods (with the 13th month payment in December). Some collective agreements also provide for a 14th payment, but this calculator considers the standard case of 12 or 13 pay periods.

How do you go from gross yearly salary to net?

From the gross yearly salary you take off the employee share of social contributions first, then income tax worked out by band and the local surcharges. What is left is the yearly net, divided by the number of pay packets.

What changes under the Italian flat rate regime?

Under the flat rate regime the bands do not apply: a single substitute tax is charged on income worked out with a profitability coefficient, and contributions depend on which fund the worker belongs to.

Does the result match the actual payslip?

It is an estimate. A real payslip also depends on employment and family allowances, on the supplementary payment, on the surcharge of your own town and on the terms of the collective agreement.
