Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about ZIP codes and ATECO codes
What are Italian ZIP codes?
The CAP (Postal Routing Code) is a 5-digit numeric code used by Poste Italiane to identify delivery areas. Provincial capitals generally have a CAP ending in "100" (e.g. 20100 Milan, 00100 Rome). Larger cities have multiple CAP ranges for different neighborhoods.
What are ATECO codes?
ATECO codes (ATtivita ECOnomiche - Economic Activities) are a classification of economic activities adopted by ISTAT. Every company must indicate its ATECO code with the Chamber of Commerce and the Revenue Agency. The code determines the sector and influences the tax regime, INPS contributions and INAIL insurance.
How do I find my business ATECO code?
You can search by keyword in the activity description or by numeric code. If you are opening a new VAT number, an accountant will help you identify the correct code. It is important to choose the right code as it determines the profitability coefficient in the flat-rate regime and INPS contribution rates.
Is the shown data complete?
This is a demo version with a representative sample of about 50 ZIP codes (regional and provincial capitals) and 50 of the most common ATECO codes. The complete database includes over 40,000 ZIP codes and thousands of ATECO codes. For official searches, consult the Poste Italiane website (for ZIP codes) and ISTAT (for ATECO codes).
How do I look up an Italian postcode by town?
In the postcode tab you can type the code itself, the name of the town, the two letter province code or the region, and the list filters as you type. Each result gives postcode, town, province and region.
How do I find the ATECO code of a business activity?
In the ATECO tab you search by code number or by a keyword of the description, for instance catering or software. Each result shows the full code and the description of the activity.
Are all the postcodes and ATECO codes listed here?
No, the search works on a sample of about fifty postcodes of provincial capitals and fifty of the most common ATECO codes. For the official data the sources stay Poste Italiane and ISTAT.
Does my data stay private?
Yes, and not because we promise it: this tool runs entirely inside your browser. What you type or upload never leaves your device, so it never reaches a server of ours and there is nothing we could keep, read or lose. You can check it yourself: open the page, disconnect from the internet, and the tool keeps working.
Do you store what I enter?
No. There is no database behind this tool: we do not store your files, your text or your results. When you close the tab nothing is left — not here with us, because it never arrived, and not anywhere else.
Do you profile me? Are you GDPR compliant?
We do not profile you: there is no account to create, we never ask for your email to use a tool, and we keep no profile of what you do. We are an Italian company and we work under the GDPR and the other European rules, with the privacy notice and the consent request in plain sight. One thing we say in full rather than hiding it behind a slogan: the ads on the page are Google's, and Google may use cookies to personalise them. You decide from the consent banner: if you say no the ads stay, but they are not personalised, and the tool works exactly the same.
If it is free, how do you make money?
From the ads on the page, and that is all. We do not sell your data, there is no hidden paid plan, there is no limit that eventually asks for your card, and you do not have to sign up. The ads pay for the servers and for the time we spend writing the tools: that is how we can keep them open to everyone.
