Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about SQL formatting

What does SQL formatting do?

The Format mode takes a messy SQL query and reorganizes it in a readable way: it uppercases keywords (SELECT, FROM, WHERE, JOIN...), inserts line breaks before major clauses, indents content inside parentheses, and breaks after each comma. It does not change the query logic, only its presentation.

Does this formatter support all SQL dialects?

This is a basic formatter, not a full SQL parser: it applies reasonable style rules that work well with standard MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, and SQLite queries. It recognizes the most common keywords and major clauses. For very complex queries with proprietary syntax it may not handle every case, but the result remains correct and readable.

Is my SQL query sent to a server?

No, all processing happens entirely in your browser via JavaScript. Your SQL query is never sent to any server or stored anywhere. This makes the tool safe even for queries that contain sensitive table names, columns, or values from your database.

What does the formatting do?

It rearranges the query to make it readable: the keywords go into upper case, the main clauses start on a new line, and whatever sits inside brackets is indented one step further.

Does it know every SQL dialect?

It applies style rules that work well with standard MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server and SQLite queries. It is not a full parser, so the result is worth a look on constructs specific to one dialect.

Is the query sent to a server?

No, it all happens in the browser. The query never leaves the device, so you can format statements that carry real table names, column names and values.
