Practical tips to cut your subscription spending

Cancel subscriptions you haven't used in over a month: you often pay for services you have forgotten.

Use family or shared plans to split the cost among several people and lower the per-person spend.

Switch to the yearly plan only for services you really use: it often costs less than 12 months of monthly billing.

Periodically audit the recurring charges on your account and card to spot the forgotten ones.

Tailored strategies for each type of subscription

Share the family plan with trusted people to split the monthly cost.

Choose the ad-supported plan if you watch little: it costs much less than the ad-free one.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about recurring subscription spending

How much does an average household spend on subscriptions?

Between video and music streaming, mobile, cloud, gym and other digital services, a household easily spends between €60 and €150 a month, i.e. €700-1,800 a year. The figure surprises because each subscription looks cheap, but added up they add weight: that is why it pays to total them at least once a year.

Is the monthly or the yearly plan better?

The yearly plan is almost always cheaper (often equivalent to 10-11 months instead of 12), but it only pays off if you are sure you will use the service all year. If you have doubts or use it seasonally, the monthly plan gives you the flexibility to cancel at any time without locking in the spend.

How do I cut useless subscriptions?

Write the full list of all subscriptions with amount and cycle (this calculator helps), then for each ask: have I used it in the last month? If the answer is no for two months in a row, cancel it. Focus first on the most expensive services and on overlapping ones (e.g. several streaming platforms with similar catalogues).

Are family or shared plans allowed?

Family plans are designed and sold specifically to be shared, so they are fully legitimate when used as the service terms intend (usually people in the same household or address). Sharing among strangers or outside the rules, however, can breach the terms of use and lead to account suspension: always read the plan conditions before splitting credentials.

How do I remember renewals and avoid surprise charges?

Mark every renewal date in your calendar with a reminder 2-3 days before, so you have time to decide whether to confirm or cancel. Turn on the service's email notifications and check your card statement once a month. For free trials, set an alert a few days before they end: that is when forgotten charges kick in.

How do I find forgotten subscriptions?

Scroll through the last 12 months of account and card statements looking for identical recurring amounts. Also check the "Subscriptions" section of your account on the App Store, Google Play and PayPal, where many automatic payments are grouped. Finally, search your inbox for words like "renewal", "invoice" or "receipt" to uncover active services you had forgotten.

What should I do before a free trial ends?

As soon as you start a free trial, mark the exact end date in your calendar with a reminder a couple of days before. If you do not plan to continue, cancel right away: most services still keep your access until the end of the free period, but you avoid the automatic charge. Also check that auto-renewal is turned off in the account settings.

How much does a household spend on subscriptions?

Between video and music streaming, mobile, cloud storage, the gym and other digital services, a household easily spends 60 to 150 euro a month, which is 700 to 1,800 a year. The figure surprises because each one looks cheap on its own.

How do I cut the subscriptions I do not use?

Write the full list with amount and billing cycle, then ask of each one: have I used it in the last month? If the answer is no twice in a row, cancel it. Start with the dearest ones rather than the easiest.

Does my data stay private?

Yes, and not because we promise it: this tool runs entirely inside your browser. What you type or upload never leaves your device, so it never reaches a server of ours and there is nothing we could keep, read or lose. You can check it yourself: open the page, disconnect from the internet, and the tool keeps working.

Do you store what I enter?

No. There is no database behind this tool: we do not store your files, your text or your results. When you close the tab nothing is left — not here with us, because it never arrived, and not anywhere else.

Do you profile me? Are you GDPR compliant?

We do not profile you: there is no account to create, we never ask for your email to use a tool, and we keep no profile of what you do. We are an Italian company and we work under the GDPR and the other European rules, with the privacy notice and the consent request in plain sight. One thing we say in full rather than hiding it behind a slogan: the ads on the page are Google's, and Google may use cookies to personalise them. You decide from the consent banner: if you say no the ads stay, but they are not personalised, and the tool works exactly the same.

If it is free, how do you make money?

From the ads on the page, and that is all. We do not sell your data, there is no hidden paid plan, there is no limit that eventually asks for your card, and you do not have to sign up. The ads pay for the servers and for the time we spend writing the tools: that is how we can keep them open to everyone.
