Everything you need to know about favicons

What are the 16, 32, 48 and 180 pixel sizes for?

16x16 is the classic browser tab favicon; 32x32 is used on high-density screens and in the bookmarks bar; 48x48 is common for Windows desktop shortcuts; 180x180 is the apple-touch-icon used when adding the site to the Home screen on iPhone and iPad. Having multiple sizes ensures a sharp look everywhere.

How do I add the favicon to my website?

Upload the downloaded PNG files to your website folder and add these lines inside the <head> tag: <link rel="icon" type="image/png" sizes="32x32" href="/favicon-32x32.png"> and <link rel="apple-touch-icon" sizes="180x180" href="/favicon-180x180.png">. You can repeat the icon tag for each size you want to serve.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. The image is read and resized entirely in your browser using a canvas element: it never leaves your device. The downloaded PNG files are also generated locally. Your privacy is guaranteed by design.
