CSS Minifier
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about CSS minification
What does CSS minification do?
Minification removes all unnecessary characters from CSS code without changing how it works: comments, whitespace, line breaks, and the last semicolon before a closing brace. The result is a smaller file that the browser downloads faster, improving site performance.
Can minification break my CSS?
This tool performs a safe regex-based minification that preserves valid syntax: it only removes whitespace, comments, and redundant semicolons. For complex CSS with special hacks or non-standard syntax, always verify the result. It processes everything locally in your browser, so your code is never sent to a server.
What is the Beautify mode for?
The Beautify mode does the opposite of minification: it takes compressed or messy CSS and reformats it with consistent indentation, line breaks, and spacing. It is useful for reading, understanding, and editing third-party CSS or code you previously minified and want to make readable again.
What does minifying CSS strip out?
Minifying CSS strips spaces, line breaks, comments and redundant semicolons, leaving the rules untouched. The stylesheet keeps working but weighs fewer bytes, so it downloads sooner.
Is the CSS I paste sent to a server?
No. Minifying and formatting happen inside the browser, on the text pasted into the page. The code is not uploaded anywhere and the result is copied from the output box.
What is the Format mode for?
Format mode does the opposite of minifying: it puts the CSS back over several lines with indentation, so a compressed stylesheet becomes readable again and can be edited or compared rule by rule.
